It’s always a little surreal to see people you knew crop up in the news in that context. This will sound more cynical than I’d like, but given the sorts of scandals that I’d expect contemporary Republicans to be involved in, campaign finance irregularities doesn’t sound much worse than a traffic ticket.

You still in touch with him?

Sort of? When I was living with my parents last year, I saw his mom some, and at Halloween he brought his kids trick or treating. His mom and I chat on instagram.

I’ve found a few articles online covering this, basically it boils down to his campaign giving money to a town republican committee (which he’s secretary of and his brother and parents are on) and then that committee gave an amount about the same to his wife’s campaign (she’s register of probate for worcester county). It was about $25,000. If he wanted to give money to her campaign directly, the limit is $100. But I have to guess lots of people in elected office do this. I’m curious as to why this particular case seems to have gotten so much attention.

My guess is (1) because it’s low-hanging fruit, and/or (2) the AG thinks this is bigger than it looks and wants to put him in a position where he might be more willing to cooperative.

It seems like a silly bureaucratic thing—and pretty minor in the grand scheme of things, especially by GOP standards—but I’ll admit I’ve gotten increasingly hardcore about limiting money in politics. I’ve spent a lot of the past four years wondering how it’s possible for a (supposedly) free society to arrive at a point where a handful of powerful people can flagrantly ignore the best interests of everyone else, and I think the core mechanism relies on using wealth to build dynasties. You do well in your private business, you get elected, you help your friends and kids get elected, and it grows.

I absolutely feel for his family, though. Maybe he’s not even wrong that this is a political hit job.
